Enormous Flyable Cube Kite by Heather and Ivan Morison
Heather Peak and Ivan Morison’s Little Shining Man—23,000-plus parts of carbon fibre, Cuben sailcloth, and printed joints—flies once a year over Jersey’s St Aubin’s Bay.
From the ground, it looks too dense to leave the earth: a deep, cellular cube of rods and translucent skin, more mineral than toy. Then the wind takes it, and Heather Peak and Ivan Morison’s Little Shining Man becomes what the artists intended—a sculpture that flies. Hand-assembled from more than 23,000 individual components, the kite is one of the stranger successes of early-2010s public art: part engineering thesis, part crystal, part beach ritual on the Channel Island of Jersey.
The artists—often credited in the period as Heather and Ivan Morison, and later presenting as Heather Peak and Ivan Morison—conceived the work for a commission that had to live two lives. Most of the year it would hang as atrium sculpture. One day a year, a section would be walked to the sand and flown.
Three cubes, one that leaves the building
Little Shining Man belongs to a larger arrangement sometimes discussed as Three Cubes Colliding. Commissioned by Philip Hewat-Jaboor for developer Dandara’s Castle Quay mixed-use scheme on the waterfront in St Helier, Jersey, the complete work was designed to occupy an atrium as a permanent installation. For 364 days, the cubes hang indoors as architecture’s guest. On the remaining day, Little Shining Man—one flyable section of the trio—is taken down, transported to St Aubin’s Bay, and lofted on winds coming across the sands.
That dual brief is not a gimmick layered on afterward. It is the design problem. The object had to be strong and light enough to fly steadily, yet tough enough to return to earth with minimal damage so it could resume life as sculpture. Failure in either direction would break the commission’s logic.
What it is made of
After roughly sixteen months of planning and development, the team settled on a modular system built from the strongest light materials they could justify:
- Carbon-fibre rods for the structural mesh
- Cuben fibre—an ultralight polyethylene/polyester composite familiar from racing yacht sails—for the skin
- Rapid-prototyped / 3D-printed nylon connectors, a specially designed joint system, to knot the mesh together at scale
Period coverage often quotes the component count—over 23,000 parts—because the number makes the handmade paradox visible. This is not a single molded object. It is a dense field of repeated small decisions. Dimensions for the flyable work are commonly given around 3 × 4.5 × 3 meters: large enough to read as architecture in the sky, light enough, in aggregate, to behave as a kite.
Bell’s tetras and pyrite’s cubes
The geometry has two explicit ancestors. One is Alexander Graham Bell’s tetrahedral kite experiments—cellular flying structures that multiply strength through repetition. The other is the cubic habit of pyrite, the mineral whose crystal forms look almost manufactured. Heather and Ivan Morison’s team took a double-wing module, duplicated it, and packed the modules into a tight cellular arrangement that reads, on the ground, as a heavy unflyable mass. Symmetry and ultralight materials reverse that first impression once the cube is aloft.
In flight, the sailcloth’s refraction and depth do important visual work. What looked solid becomes ethereal; what looked like a crate becomes a hovering crystal. Videos of the St Aubin’s Bay flights—among them work associated with James O’Garra / JimandTonic—make that transformation legible in seconds: awkward cube, then levitating lattice with no visible engine.
Who built it
Conceiving artists Heather and Ivan Morison did not fabricate alone. London architectural designer Sash Reading provided design and technical consultation. Birmingham studio Queen and Crawford handled component design, structural detail, and fabrication. Design documentation and visualization credits in contemporary notes include Emily Thurlow; fitting manufacture involved 3TRPD’s selective laser sintering for the connector ecology. Photography around the project has been credited to Matt Porteous among others.
That roster matters because Little Shining Man is easy to mislabel as a lone sculptor’s whim. It is closer to a temporary aerospace cottage industry: artists, an architectural designer, a fabrication studio, and digital manufacturing joined to solve flight and display at once. Naming Heather Peak and Ivan Morison correctly keeps the authorship clear; naming the collaborators keeps the engineering honest.
Why the “ungainly” look is the point
If the cube looked obviously aerodynamic, the marvel would shrink. The work’s comedy and grandeur both depend on looking wrong on the sand—too boxy, too dense, too architectural—and then proving the eye mistaken. Lightweight architecture here is not a metaphor. It is a literal claim: a hand-built mesh can occupy atrium air and bay air with equal seriousness.
There is also a civic rhythm embedded in the commission. An atrium sculpture that never moves can become furniture. A sculpture that is annually unhooked, carried to the beach, and flown turns maintenance into ceremony. Residents and visitors get a recurring proof that the hanging crystals are not merely décor. One of them remembers how to leave.
Watching and reading the piece today
If you encounter Little Shining Man through stills, look for the connectors—the tiny printed joints that make the 23,000-part count believable. If you encounter it through flight video, watch the transition from ground awkwardness to airborne steadiness; that is the thesis. If you encounter it in writing from 2011–2012 (Dezeen, The Atlantic, and design journals among them), notice how consistently the dual life—atrium and bay—is stressed. The flyable cube is not a demo for a product line. It is a chapter in a site-specific artwork’s year.
For makers, the durable lessons are practical:
- Design the recovery as carefully as the launch.
- Let modular repetition solve scale.
- Borrow materials from fields that already obsess over strength-to-weight (here, yacht sails and carbon rod).
- Accept that the best public art sometimes needs a calendar, not only a plinth.
A cube that earns its sky
Heather and Ivan Morison’s enormous flyable cube remains compelling because it refuses to choose between sculpture and kite. It is both, on purpose, with the paperwork and the wind to prove it. Carbon fibre, Cuben fibre, and thousands of printed nylon joints sound like a materials list from a lab; on a Jersey beach they become something closer to folklore—an ungainly shining man that rises, hangs in the bay air, and then returns to the atrium to wait for next year’s weather.
When you see the cube on the ground, believe the heaviness. When you see it flying, believe the lightness. The artwork lives in the argument between those two beliefs, settled once a year by the wind over St Aubin’s Bay.
